Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was stabbed early Saturday morning in downtown Indianapolis and is hospitalized in stable condition. Police say the incident occurred shortly after midnight near the intersection of West Washington Street and North Senate Avenue.
Officers arrived to find two men injured following a physical altercation. Sanchez, 38, was taken to Methodist Hospital. Authorities said another man at the scene was also injured but did not disclose his condition. Investigators are reviewing surveillance video and witness statements. One person was detained, and police said the case remains under review by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
Sanchez was in Indianapolis to work as a Fox Sports analyst covering Sunday’s Colts-Raiders game. The network said he is recovering and expected to remain under observation for several days. Fox issued a brief statement thanking hospital staff and asking for privacy for Sanchez and his family.
Police believe the stabbing followed a dispute that escalated into a fight behind a nearby bar. Detectives said the incident appears isolated and not part of any broader criminal activity in the area. No charges have yet been filed.
Sanchez played ten seasons in the NFL after being drafted fifth overall by the New York Jets in 2009. He led the team to two consecutive AFC Championship games in his first two seasons. His later career included time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington. He retired from football in 2019 and began working as a broadcaster for ESPN before joining Fox Sports in 2021.
Known for his calm on-air style and familiarity with the game’s strategy, Sanchez has developed a steady presence in football commentary. He has also served as a mentor to young quarterbacks and as a regular contributor to Fox’s college football coverage.
Fans and former teammates have posted messages of support, noting his contributions both on and off the field. Indianapolis police said updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
