TIFF Pulls The Road Between Us from 2025 Lineup Over Hamas-Source Footage Rights; Filmmakers Cry Censorship

The Toronto International Film Festival has removed the documentary The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue from its upcoming lineup, citing unresolved issues over footage rights. The film, directed by Barry Avrich, tells the story of Major General Noam Tibon’s desperate effort to rescue his family during the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Central to the dispute is the inclusion of video captured and livestreamed by Hamas during the assault.

Festival organizers said the footage had not been legally cleared for use, raising concerns about potential legal and security risks. The decision means the film will not be shown when the festival opens on September 4, despite earlier promotional materials listing it as part of the program.

The filmmakers have denounced the move as censorship, arguing the footage is publicly available and should be considered in the public domain. They contend that removing the film undermines the festival’s stated mission to champion artistic freedom, especially for works that tackle difficult and politically sensitive subjects.

While the festival’s explanation centers on rights issues, some believe concerns over potential protests or disruptions may have played a role in the decision. The controversy has quickly become a flashpoint in the cultural debate over how institutions handle politically charged art in a polarized climate.

Avrich and his team say they intend to release the film independently, bypassing the festival circuit. They maintain that their work is a vital record of a day that shook Israel and the wider world, and insist that audiences should have the opportunity to see it unaltered. With the festival less than a month away, the dispute has fueled a broader discussion about the balance between legal compliance, public safety, and the role of film festivals as defenders of free expression.
