Was this another case of driving while black? Soulja Boy, the rapper born DeAndre Cortez Way and sometimes referred to as “Soldier Boy” in rap culture, was released from custody after being arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of gun charges. He had been stopped by police during a traffic check in the Fairfax District in the early hours of August 3, 2025, and was taken into custody over the discovery of a firearm in the vehicle in which he was a passenger. Law enforcement reports indicated the firearm was found during the routine stop, and Way was booked on a felony weapons charge tied to his status as a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Authorities later confirmed that the district attorney’s office declined to file charges, and he was subsequently released without formal indictment.
