Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Tops Noms at sag awards

The Martin McDonagh-directed drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, took the lead at the SAG awards nominations Wednesday with a total of four nods in major categories that singled out stars Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. But it was the nomination for best ensemble in addition to those for its individual players that sets the film in prime position to be the favorite for best picture at next year’s Oscar ceremonies.

Right behind Billboards with three nominations was Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age dramedy, Lady Bird, with three nominations including best ensemble, and best actress and supporting actress for Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf.

Other films picking up best ensemble nominations were The Big Sick, Get Out, Mudbound and The Shape of Water.

Best ensemble nominations tend to be an early indication of how Oscar voters will favor the year’s films in the best picture category. SAG members — the Screen Actors Guild — number in excess of 100 thousand. Actors represent the largest block of the voting members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.

Conspicuous by its absence was Steven Spielberg’s Nixon-era drama, The Post. Stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks also came away empty-handed.

On the television side, Netflix’s sci-fi drama, Stranger Things, it’s women’s wrestling comedy, Glow and HBO’s Big Little Lies each came in with four nominations apiece.

Best ensemble nominations for drama went to Netflix’s The Crown and Stranger Things along with Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, HBO’s Game of Throwns and NBC’s This is Us.

On the comedy side, picking up best ensemble nods were ABC’s Black-ish, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm as well as Veep, along with Netflix’s Glow and its Orange is the New Black.
