He was an Emmy-winning actor and a staple of multiple television programs. But he was perhaps best known for his role opposite Tom Selleck on the long-running detective series, Magnum, P.I. Veteran character actor John Hillerman died Thursday of natural causes at his Houston home, according to a spokesperson for the family.
In addition to roles on several series including shows as The Betty White Show and One Day at a Time, Hillerman appeared in films such as Chinatown and Blazing Saddles. But it was Magum, P.I/ that made Hillerman a household name. Starring as John Higgins opposite Selleck’s Magnum, Hillerman picked up four Emmy nominations for his work on the series, including one win. The series aired from 1980 to 1988.
Hillerman was 84.
