Before there was Molly’s Game, the movie, there was the 2014 book, Molly’s Game: The True Story of the 26-year-old Woman Behind the Most Exclusive, High-Stakes Poker Game in the World. The protagonist of both is one Molly Bloom, a former world-class skier who, as luck would have it, fell into an opportunity which in 2013 got her arrested by the FBI and charged with running an illegal gambling operation, a felony. She was 34.
In 2014, Bloom entered a plea of guilty to a lesser charge, and, in a plea deal was sentenced to a year’s probation, a fine and 200 hours of community service.
Bloom took her book to Hollywood where she sought a meeting with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. Sorkin agreed to adapt Bloom’s book for the big screen and took on directing duties as well. What makes the story especially noteworthy is the list of the luminaries from Hollywood, Wall Street, sports and politics who frequented Bloom’s game. Bloom names three in particular who were high-profile actors: Tobey Maguire, Leonardo Dicaprio and Ben Affleck.
Bloom is portrayed in the film version of her story by actress Jessica Chastain. The film was adapted from the book and directed by Aaron Sorkin. Critics on RottenTomatoes have viewed the film favorably and have given it a score of 81. Award attention Chastain has garnered seems certain to sell more of Bloom’s already best-selling account of her life and poker prowess.
